The pyramid is 4,300-year-old monument is believed to be the tomb of Queen Sesheshet, the mother of Pharaoh Teti, the founder ancient Egypt's 6th dynasty.

Making Electricity

The electricity that we use in our homes is made along way away. It is made, or generated, in a power station. From the power stations, the electricity travels all over the country through overhead cables. Steel towers called pylons carry the cables. Are there any pylons near where you live?

In most power stations the electricity is made by huge machines, called steam turbines. Steam from a boiler spins the turbines, and the turbines turn the generators that make the electricity. Some power stations use water turbines to turn the generators. Water flowing downhill through pipes spins these turbines.
This is a steam power station. Most stations burn coal or oil to heat up the water in the boiler.

The Earth

There is one ball you can stand on easily, because it is so big. It is the ball we live on, which we call the earth.

Some of the earth is covered with land, but most of it is covered with water. We call the big areas of land the continents, and the big areas of water the oceans, or seas. We live on Islands next to the continent of Europe with the Atlantic Ocean to the west.

All around the earth there is a layer of air, which we call the atmosphere. When we go above the atmosphere, we are in Space. So the earth is a huge ball of rock , water and other things, surrounded by atmosphere and moving in Space.

Gases

There are gases all around us. They are the gases that air is made of. We can't see the air, we can't touched it, and we can't taste it. But we can feel it and hear it when it moves. We can also feel the air pushing against us when we cycle or run fast.

Air is one of the most important things on earth. We must breath air to live. Without air, we would die. Underwater and out in Space there is no air. We can only go there if we take air with us.

People who dive under the water take air with them in metal bottles. We can squeeze a lot of air into the bottles. This is compressed air. We can squeeze all gases in the same way, but we can't do this to liquid or solids.

Science

You know guy's that the word science come from the Latin word scire which means ''to know''. This is not just things we know about the world. It is an organized way of knowing and investigating the world. To satisfy our curiosity about the world, scientist always ask questions. They also try to explain why things happen. They believe that nothing happens without a cause. However, there are people who still maintain that this is not always the case.

For example, we might have observed our grandparents and other people carry out some unusual practices and beliefs. This belief and practices have been passed on to our parents too, some of these beliefs and practices have logical or scientific explanations while some have no scientific basis at all.
The beliefs and practices that have no scientific basis are called Superstitions.

Putting energy to work

We use energy to do work. Try making a simple toy that puts energy to work.

1. Push the rubber band through the hole in the middle of the cotton reel. Break the matchstick in half and push a piece through the loop of the rubber band. Tape the matchstick to the cotton reel, so that it cannot turn.

• An empty cotton reel
• A matchstick
• A rubber band
• A piece of sticky tape
• A round bead
• A pencil about 10 centimeters long
  
  

2. At the other end, pull the rubber band through the bead with an unbent paper clip, and then push the pencil through the loop. The rubber band should be holding everything together, so0 if it's too loose find another the right length.

3. Wind the pencil round ten times and let go of the cotton reel on a flat surface. What happens?


The rubber band makes the cotton reel move, but where did the energy of the rubber band come from? What difference does the number of turns in the band make?Try it with 20,30 or 40 turns. Does changing the length of the pencil make any difference?You could try making a bigger machine from an empty washing-up liquid bottle.

Underground electricity cables

If you look up a torch bulb closely, you will see that there is fine wire inside, which lights up when electricity passes through it. The electric bulbs we use to light up our homes are the same, but they use a much stronger kind of electricity . This comes into our homes through thick wires, or cables.

Main electricity is very useful but it is very dangerous. Never try to look inside electric plugs and sockets or play about with any electrical equipment . You could get an electric shock that would hurt you.

When you press the button on an electric bell, electricity from the battery makes the striker hit the bell.

Electric Current

When i go outside at night, i need to take a torch with me to see where me are going. When i switch on the torch, it lights up. The light is made by electricity. This is not the same as static electricity, but is the sort of electricity which flows through wires and other pieces of metal. When electricity flows, i say there is an electric current.

In a torch the electricity comes from a battery. A battery makes electricity when chemicals inside it join together. Have you anything worked by batteries?

If i took a torch to pieces, i would find that it has many parts. It is made up of a bulb, one or two batteries, and a switch. These parts are joined together by pieces of metal. The metal makes a path where electricity can flow from the battery to the bulb, and back. This kind of path is an electric circuit which usually has a switch in it. When the switch are turned 'OFF', it leaves a gap in the circuit and no electricity can flow through.

Electric current

These parts are joined together by pieces of metal.The metal makes a path where electricity can flow from the battery to the bulb, and back. This kind of path is an electric circuit which usually has a switch in it. When the switch is turned 'Off ' , if leaves a gap in the circuit and no electricity can flow through.

ELECTRICITY

I can find out about electricity using just a plastic comb. Run the comb several times through your hair, then hold it just above your hair. I will find that your hair will stand on end. By rubbing with the comb, you have given your hair a little bit of electricity, and you have also given an electric charge to your comb. These electric charges on your hair and the comb attract one another, and this is why your hair stands up. Electric charges like this are called static electricity.

I can giv many things, such as fur and plastic, an electric charge by rubbing them. Have you noticed that your shirt or blouse crackles when you take it off? That noise is made by static electricity.

When you walk across a nylon fibre carpet, your whole body picks up eletricity. Sometimes when you reach for a metal door knob afterwards, you give yourself a little electric shock! If the room is dark, you may even see sparks come from your fingers. The sparks are made as the electricity jumps through the air.

The same kind of things happens in the air during at thunderstorm. Static electricity builds up in the thunderclouds. Then suddenly the electricity sparks down to the ground and we see a flash of lightning. It can do a lot of damge, even knock down trees and buildings and set things on fire.

MAGNETISM

Have you ever played with a magnet? If you have, i will know that it picks up things like paper clips and drawing pins, pulling them with the force of magnetism. I may have noticed that a magnet will only pick up certain things, mostly ones made of iron or steel. Magnets are usually made from iron because iron is the only common metal that is magnet.

Magnets do not always attract, or pull things towards them. Sometimes they repel things, or push them away. I can make this happen if i have two magnets. If i bring one end of the first magnet up to one end of the first magnet up to one end of the second magnet, the ends will either stick together (attract) or fly apart (repel).

Take one of your magnets and hang it from one piece of cotton tied round the middle. Do this several times. What happens? I should find that it always points in the same direction when it stops moving. One end points to the north, and the other to the South. We call the north-pointing end of a magnet, its north pole, and the south-pointing end, its south pole. It seems as if the earth has magnets at its north pole and south pole, which attract your magnet.

Wherever you go on Earth, you find that a swinging magnet always ends up pointing north and south. So if you carry a magnet about with you, you can can always tell which way is north. An easier way to do at this is to use a compass.

Gravity

The gravity of the world is very powerful. That is why it is difficult to get into Space. The space shuttle beats gravity by having very powerful rocket engines. They make it grow very much faster than a rifle bullet. In Space, it travels hundreds of kilometres every minute.

What happens when i throw a ball into the air? It goes up a little way and then falls back to the ground. When apples are ripe, they fall of a tree. If i jump up in the air, i soon come down again. Something is pulling you, the ball and the apple back to the ground. It is a force i call gravity. Gravity keeps people in the ground, the waters in the oceans, and the air in the atmosphere. It also goes out a long way in Space. It even keeps the Moon in place thousands and thousands of kilometres away!

Up in Space, astronauts do not seem to be affected by gravity. They feel weightless and just float about like this astronaut in the space shuttle's cargo bay.

It is gravity that gives me my weight. Weight is force with which the Earth pulls my body. It is not the same as my mass. Mass is the amount of a stuff in my body. This never changes. But my weight can change, if gravity changes.

If i went far out into Space, i would find that i seem to be weightless! I would just float about as if there was no gravity. Gravity is still there, but its pull on my is tiny because of the way my are travelling in Space.

Engines

At first people used their own strength to work the machines they built. Next they used animals. Then they found out how to use the power of the wind when it blows, and of water when it flows. They built machines to catch this power stores as engines to work their other machines. This power 'catchers' were the sails and waterwheels which drove the mills.

Soon people found out how to make steam work their engines. Steam engines were very powerful and could be used anywhere to drive bigger and better machines. Some steam engines were use in the first cars. But today our cars have a much more powerful engine, the petrol engine. It uses petrol as fuel. The engine uses the energy from burning petrol to turn the car wheels.

The petrol engine has hundreds of different parts. There are several pistons and cylinders. The petrol burns in the tops of the cylinders and make hot gases. The hot gases push the pistons down. This movement makes a rod, or shaft, turn. Then gearwheels and other shafts carry the movement to the wheels.

We use other kinds of engines to turn the machines that make our electricity. One spins when water flows through it and is called a water turbine.

Simple Machines

I use hundreds of different machines to help us with my work. Machines help us travel, farm the land, make things for us, type my letters, wash my clothes. Machines put forces to work. They help us to do things more easily and usually quickly. t is much faster to sew a dress with a sewing machine than it is by hand. Most machines are driven by engines or electric motors.



Some machines are very simple indeed. I use a hammer as a machine when i take out a nail with the prongs on its head, because me are using the hammer as a lever, which is one of the simplest machines. I often use levers to apply extra force to something. Garden spades, tweezers, and pliers are all kinds of lever. I use them as machines to help me do something more easily.


The screw and wedge are other simple machines. I can easily turn the screw of a workshop vice to make it grip something tightly. An axe has a head shaped like a wedge. The wedge has a thin edge to go into the wood easily, and then the sides of the wedge force the wood outwards so it splits.

Other simple machines use wheels. A pulley is a wheel with a rope running over it. By fastening loads to pulleys, i can make it easier to lift heavy things. I just have to pull on the other end of the rope. Another wheel machine is the wheel and axle, which is like a pedals and chain wheel on a bicycle.

I can make my bicycle go on pushing the pedals. A chain carries the force of my pedalling to the axle of the back wheel, and turns it round. The chain joins a gear wheel on the pedals to a smaller one on the back wheel. This smaller wheel turns faster than the pedal gear, and that makes my pedalling turn the bicycle wheel faster.

Who is my mom? Is she good or bad? My Mom is ROSALITA G. MORENO. No.
She lways here to me. If i have a problem there is she. She love me so much. And She Love her so much.
Is she is important to me? Yes, because she is beside to me to all. She carry me when i was a baby AND now, there is she.. My only one MOTHER.

Forces at Work

Put a ball on the table so that it keeps still. If i don't touch it, it will stay where it is, and it will only start to move when i push it. A cart will stay on a flat place until a horse or tractor pulls it, then it starts moving. These pulls and pushes are called forces, and forces make things move. They can also all things down and stop them moving. When i put on the brakes on my bicycle, me airs applying forces to the wheels, which try to stop them moving.

In general, things are still stay still, and things that are moving stay moving, and it is hard to make them change. I say that they have inertia. I can use a big bowl full of water to show inertia. Put it on the ground outside and suddenly push the bowl hard. I will find that bowl moves, but the water inside stays there. Then what happens?

When i roll a table-tennis ball gently along the carpet, i find that it goes so far and then stops. Some force must be making it slow down. It is a force i call friction. There is friction when any objects moves and rubs against another. Rough surfaces have a lot of friction; Try rolling your ping-pong ball along a smooth floor to see how far it goes.

Friction also makes heat. I can find this out by rubbing my hands together.

Colour

In our colourful world, the commonest colour is green. Almost all plants have green leaves to help them make their food. Flowers may be any colour i can think of, and often then bright colours attract insects. Things i buy come in colours of all kinds, because the people who make them with dyes or paints to make them look nicer. Do i have a favourite colour?
Where do colours come from? The light that comes from the Sun is yellowish-white, but all the different colours i see are already in sunlight. This is because sunlight is really a mixture of all the colours of the rainbow. When sunlight splits up into its colours as it passes through raindrops, all the colours separate into a rainbow.

Here i see all the colours of the rainbow. There are seven colours from top to bottom. They are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet.
This explains why thing are coloured. I see a fire engine when sunlight is reflected from it into our eyes, but the paint covering the life engine takes in, or absorbs, all the colours in the sunlight except red. The red colour is reflected from the paint into my eyes, and i see the fire engine as red. White things reflect all the colours.

Not everyday can see colours properly. Some people cannot tell the difference between green and reds, or blues and yellows. Dogs and many other animals can't see any colours at all.

Seeing

Sight is the most important of all our senses. Our eyes tell us most about the world around us.

Like most other animals, i have two eyes. I can find the reason for this. Close one eye and ask a friend to hold the pencil in front of me. Probably i will miss it. With only one eye i can't tell how far away the pencil is. Now do the same thing with both eyes open, and i will probably touch the pencil first time. Using two eyes i can judge distances. This is because each of my eyes has a slightly different view.

Look at of my eyes in a mirror. Can i see it is curved? This is because is forms part of a ball, called the eyeball. Most of the eyeball is white on the outside. The only coloured part is a circle in front which i called the iris. In the middle of a iris is a black spot, the pupil, which is actually a hole that lets light into the eye.

The iris can change the size of a pupil. In very bright light, the iris closes a pupil but in dim light, the iris opens it. I can test this for myself. Sit under a light and hold a mirror in front of my face. Look at my eyes, then close them in a few minutes. Open them and look at my pupils. What do i see?

Light goes through a pupil and then through a lens. The lens bends the light rays so that they form a picture on the back of the eyeball, the retina, which sends messages about the picture on it to the brain. The brain tells us what the picture is and i see.

Mirrors and lenses

When i look at myself in a mirror, i see a picture of myself which is not a true picture, but a mirror image. When i wink my right eye, the left eye of my mirror image winks back. If i left my right arm, my mirror image lifts the left. Try it and see.

Ordinary mirrors are flat but some mirrors are curved. Shaving mirrors curve like the inside of a saucer. When i look into a shaving mirror, my face look bigger than usual. The mirrors has magnified my face.

Other curved mirrors can make i look smaller, taller, fatter, thinner and even upside-down. Try it with a spoon, since the curved top and bottom surfaces of a spoon make good mirrors. Hold the spoon in front of you in different positions and see how my image changes. What difference do i notice between the front and back of the spoon?

KITCHEN DRUGSTORE

The kitchen where are we daily meals are prepared can also be little drugstore. Why? Because the vegetables and spices that we use everyday can cure common diseases at home.

Bitter melon popularly known as ampalaya is good for hemmorhoids, stomach pains and fever. Certain acids in ampalaya control these diseases.

Swamp cabbage or kangkong is good laxative. It works both for adults and children. Preparing the laxative is easy, just boil the vegetables and use the juice.

Horse radish tree or malunggay as others call it, is good for skin ulcers and sores.

Some of spices in our kitchen that can cure common diseases are garlic, onion, and ginger.

Garlic or bawang is good for high blood pressure. It is also good for tootaches and insects bites.

Onion or sibuyas is good for gas pains (kabag) and joundice (paninilaw).

Ginger or luya as we call it, is good for cold, cough, sore throat, intestinal pains and gas.

PARKINSON'S DRUG CAN TRIGGER

Is a loved one suddenly having problems with compulsive gambling? If the person is being treated for Parkinson's disease, the cause may lie in his medication.

Researches are looking into the connection between compulsive behavior and a specific dopamine agonist, pramipexole, which is used to treat Parkinson's.

Dopamine is a chemical naturally produced by the human body. It plays an important role in the brains control of movement. It is linked with addictive behaviors and pleasurable experiences such as drugs, sex and food. A shortage of it, however, causes with dopamine can possibly cause the patient to seek addictive behaviors such gambling, hypersexuality and overeating.

Despite the strong link between the two, there's still no firm evidence to support the theory. In the study they conducted among 529 people talking pramipexole, only 1.5% developed gambling behavior.

A Rise In HOMOSEXUAL TOLERANCE

More in more people are saying it's ok to have same sex marriages. Base on a survey by the Pew Research Center conducted a few months ago, 39% of Americans expressed their support for gay unions, a 9% rise compared to a poll taken the previous year. The drastic rise in tolerance may be attributed to the opportunities given for gay rights advocates to be heard.

The findings indicate that people are becoming more open and tolerants said the research center's director Micheal Dimock.

BEWARE OF CAPILLARIASIS

Capilliariasis is an infection by capillaria philippines, C-hepatica, C-denphila.

In severe infections generalized abdominal pain, diarrhea and pronounced borborygmi one followed by nausea and vomiting and intractable diarrhea, leading to severe malabsorption, cachexia, and death.

The life cycle of C-philippiensis is not known, but infection is probably acquired by ingesting eggs or infective larvae on small fish.

Also, the combination of muscular wasting, and lost of body fat makes intestinal penstalsis visible and outlines muscles and tendons through the skin. At autopsy the small is indurated, thickness, and distended with fluid.

At present, mehendazole is the drug of choice .

Light and Colour

Light

• During the day i see the world around us as a because the light from the Sun is shining. Sunlights brings life to our world. Plants cannot make food in the dark, as they need the energy of sunlight to make it. Without plants, nothing else could live. At night the Sun sets and its light can no longer rich us. The sky gets dark, and i cannot see the things around us. Can i imagine what life would be like if i always lived in the dark? Do i know any animals that live in the dark?
• I can make light by burning things. Candles, coal fires and gas flames give out light when they burn. Years ago, people went to bed once it was dark because candles were expensive. Nowadays, i don't have to stay in the dark at nights because i have electric lights which are cheap. Light bulbs have wires in them that glow white-hot when electricity goes through them.
• Light usually goes straight from one thing to another. But i can make it turns corners by using a mirror. A mirror is usually a piece of glass with a silvery coating on one side to send back, or reflect, the light. I can't reflect light well without the silvery coating because most light goes straight through ordinary glass, which is transparent. Water is also transparent, and let's light through. Algough water and glass do not reflect light well, they can make it bend.
  

Hearing

Hearing is one of our senses. I hear when our ears pick up sound waves in the air which make our eardrums vibrate. These vibrations are passed on the nerves inside the air, which send message to the brain. The brain then tells us what the sounds are like.

When the sounds waves vibrate slowly, I hear a low, or low-pitched, sound. When the sound vibrations are fast, I hear high-pitched sounds. Some animals, such as dogs, can hear much higher sound than i can and we sometimes use 'silent' whistles to call them. The sound these 'silent' whistles make is so high that I can't hear it, but the dogs can.

Bats can make and hear even higher sounds. They make these sounds to find they way around at night by listening for echoes from things in their path. They find their prey in the way.

EVERYDAY WORLD OF SCIENCE

HEAT

Do i like summer better than winter because the weather is warmer? My bodies need to be kept warm, and if they get too cold, I will die. So in winter i have to wear more clothes to keep in the heat of my bodies.

Most of the heat in our world comes from the Sun. If the sun didn't shine, the world would be a very cold place. Nothing would be able to live here. I can make heat by burning fuels such as wood, gas and oil. I can also make heat from electricity, such as happens in electric fires and electric cookers.

Like other kinds of energy, heat can move from one place to another. When i stir a cup of tea with the cold spoon, what happens? The handle of the spoon gets hot. I call this way heat moves, conduction. Heat always goes from something hot to something cold.

Sound

When me are riding my bicycle, and someone gets in my way, I ring my bell. The other person hears my bell, and jumps out of the way. The bell has made sounds that have travelled through the air into that person ears.

What is sound? I can find out if i touch my bicycle bell white it is ringing. I can find that the outside of the is moving quickly, or vibrating. The bell passes on these vibrations to the air as waves of the sound. In the air, the sound waves move out in all directions, rather like the ripples in a pond moving out after you have thrown in a stone.
The picture shows what the bell looks like inside. When you press the lever to ring the bell, the toothed gears make the middle part spin round. The little loose weights at the ends fly out and hit the bell, making it ring.

ENERGY IN ACTIONS

Energy all around us.

I have probably noticed that if i run and play games for too long, I became tired and hungry, but once i have eaten something, I feel much better and are ready to do something else. This is because the food i have eaten has given me energy, the energy i need to keep going. I also need food to grow.

Most of food i eat comes froms plants. Some comes from animals, but animals themselves eat plants, so we can really say that all our food comes from plants. Plants are alive, like us, so they also need food to live and grow.
