Radiant Energy

Radiant energy is the energy of electromagnetic waves - radio waves, infrared rays, visible light , ultraviolet rays, X rays and gamma rays. It is emitted in all directions from a source, and it travels through matter or through space.

Radiant energy finds wide application in such appliances as a radio television and microwave oven. It is also used in X-ray examination, in ultrasound analysis, and in remote sensing to study land contours, to monitor animal migrations and pollution of waterways, to survey the distribution of remaining forests and mangrove swamps in our country, to locate mineral deposits, and other purposes. Light energy is converted to chemical energy during photosynthesis and in photography.

Keeping the Dictionary Habit

As has been stressed in other years, one excellent method of improving one's speech is the dictionary habit. What kind of dictionary is best? The pocket dictionaries and the much abridged dictionaries are not complete but can be of help.

Take time in looking up a word. Notice its part of speech; learn its idiomatic usage. Look at the abbreviation or word in italics that sometimes precedes the definition.

Natural Materials

We now make most of the materials use for building. But one natural material, wood, is still very important to us. Wood is strong. The strongest parts of plants are the stems, trunks and branches, and these are made of wood. Wood can make building strong, too.

In some ways, buildings are like trees. A tall tree has to be able to bend in the wind, or in the end it would break. A skyscraper also has to be able to move a little, although you do not notice it.

Trees have roots under them to hold them up and stop them falling over or sinking into the ground. Buildings have layers of concrete, or foundations, underneath them to do the same thing.

Malleability

A solid which can be extended or shaped by beating with a hammer or by the pressure of rollers is said to be malleable. Thus we see gold leaves and silver leaves used as adornment in jewelry and clothing.

Elasticity, ductility and malleability are three properties of many metals which make them useful for construction materials and jewelry.
