Chemistry as Science

Even among the sciences, there are distinguishing characteristics that differentiate one from the other. Although students of chemistry, biology, physics, and other related sciences all study of behavior of living and non living things, their scientific viewpoints differ. For example, in studying animals, a biologist is interested to know the physical characteristics, life cycle, and how nutrients are metabolized. A physicist may study the mechanics of motion of the limbs of the animals which allow them to run and do high jump.

A geologist will examine these forms of life found in fossils in relation to the physical nature and history of the Earth. A chemist, on the other hand, may analyze the components of the different parts of the animals. The four scientist may be studying the same animal, but their interests on the animal differ.

Chemistry is the science that studies matter. In chemistry, we are interested in knowing that animals and all living organisms are complex combination of substances, possessing the qualities of life. Matter refers to all kinds of things around us, whether alive or lifeless and whether naturally occurring synthetically prepared. The things, the objects we see, hear, taste, smell, and feel - like the trees and houses, falling rain and the telephone, fruits and beverages, flowers and soaps, sea breeze and cool air from air conditioners are different kinds of matter. In fact, everything in physical world and the whole universe consists of matter. Even our bodies - yours, all others - and mine are complex and highly organized bundles of matter.
