Seeing

Sight is the most important of all our senses. Our eyes tell us most about the world around us.

Like most other animals, i have two eyes. I can find the reason for this. Close one eye and ask a friend to hold the pencil in front of me. Probably i will miss it. With only one eye i can't tell how far away the pencil is. Now do the same thing with both eyes open, and i will probably touch the pencil first time. Using two eyes i can judge distances. This is because each of my eyes has a slightly different view.

Look at of my eyes in a mirror. Can i see it is curved? This is because is forms part of a ball, called the eyeball. Most of the eyeball is white on the outside. The only coloured part is a circle in front which i called the iris. In the middle of a iris is a black spot, the pupil, which is actually a hole that lets light into the eye.

The iris can change the size of a pupil. In very bright light, the iris closes a pupil but in dim light, the iris opens it. I can test this for myself. Sit under a light and hold a mirror in front of my face. Look at my eyes, then close them in a few minutes. Open them and look at my pupils. What do i see?

Light goes through a pupil and then through a lens. The lens bends the light rays so that they form a picture on the back of the eyeball, the retina, which sends messages about the picture on it to the brain. The brain tells us what the picture is and i see.

Mirrors and lenses

When i look at myself in a mirror, i see a picture of myself which is not a true picture, but a mirror image. When i wink my right eye, the left eye of my mirror image winks back. If i left my right arm, my mirror image lifts the left. Try it and see.

Ordinary mirrors are flat but some mirrors are curved. Shaving mirrors curve like the inside of a saucer. When i look into a shaving mirror, my face look bigger than usual. The mirrors has magnified my face.

Other curved mirrors can make i look smaller, taller, fatter, thinner and even upside-down. Try it with a spoon, since the curved top and bottom surfaces of a spoon make good mirrors. Hold the spoon in front of you in different positions and see how my image changes. What difference do i notice between the front and back of the spoon?

KITCHEN DRUGSTORE

The kitchen where are we daily meals are prepared can also be little drugstore. Why? Because the vegetables and spices that we use everyday can cure common diseases at home.

Bitter melon popularly known as ampalaya is good for hemmorhoids, stomach pains and fever. Certain acids in ampalaya control these diseases.

Swamp cabbage or kangkong is good laxative. It works both for adults and children. Preparing the laxative is easy, just boil the vegetables and use the juice.

Horse radish tree or malunggay as others call it, is good for skin ulcers and sores.

Some of spices in our kitchen that can cure common diseases are garlic, onion, and ginger.

Garlic or bawang is good for high blood pressure. It is also good for tootaches and insects bites.

Onion or sibuyas is good for gas pains (kabag) and joundice (paninilaw).

Ginger or luya as we call it, is good for cold, cough, sore throat, intestinal pains and gas.

PARKINSON'S DRUG CAN TRIGGER

Is a loved one suddenly having problems with compulsive gambling? If the person is being treated for Parkinson's disease, the cause may lie in his medication.

Researches are looking into the connection between compulsive behavior and a specific dopamine agonist, pramipexole, which is used to treat Parkinson's.

Dopamine is a chemical naturally produced by the human body. It plays an important role in the brains control of movement. It is linked with addictive behaviors and pleasurable experiences such as drugs, sex and food. A shortage of it, however, causes with dopamine can possibly cause the patient to seek addictive behaviors such gambling, hypersexuality and overeating.

Despite the strong link between the two, there's still no firm evidence to support the theory. In the study they conducted among 529 people talking pramipexole, only 1.5% developed gambling behavior.

A Rise In HOMOSEXUAL TOLERANCE

More in more people are saying it's ok to have same sex marriages. Base on a survey by the Pew Research Center conducted a few months ago, 39% of Americans expressed their support for gay unions, a 9% rise compared to a poll taken the previous year. The drastic rise in tolerance may be attributed to the opportunities given for gay rights advocates to be heard.

The findings indicate that people are becoming more open and tolerants said the research center's director Micheal Dimock.

Aside from the rise in approval of homesexual marriages, people are also more amenable for these couples to adopt chidren. From 57% opposition in 1999, nubers went down by 9%.

It is still an issue-a lot of people who opposed it then still oppose it now. But a lot of people who oppsed it then were in an intense environment and either feel less strongly or feel that people can do what they want to do, "Dimock added.

BEWARE OF CAPILLARIASIS

In 1962, the first reported case of human intestinal capillariasis occurred in a previously healthy young man from Luzon in the Philippines, who subsequently died.

Capilliariasis is an infection by capillaria philippines, C-hepatica, C-denphila.

In severe infections generalized abdominal pain, diarrhea and pronounced borborygmi one followed by nausea and vomiting and intractable diarrhea, leading to severe malabsorption, cachexia, and death.

The life cycle of C-philippiensis is not known, but infection is probably acquired by ingesting eggs or infective larvae on small fish.

Also, the combination of muscular wasting, and lost of body fat makes intestinal penstalsis visible and outlines muscles and tendons through the skin. At autopsy the small is indurated, thickness, and distended with fluid.

At present, mehendazole is the drug of choice .

Light and Colour

Light

• During the day i see the world around us as a because the light from the Sun is shining. Sunlights brings life to our world. Plants cannot make food in the dark, as they need the energy of sunlight to make it. Without plants, nothing else could live. At night the Sun sets and its light can no longer rich us. The sky gets dark, and i cannot see the things around us. Can i imagine what life would be like if i always lived in the dark? Do i know any animals that live in the dark?
• I can make light by burning things. Candles, coal fires and gas flames give out light when they burn. Years ago, people went to bed once it was dark because candles were expensive. Nowadays, i don't have to stay in the dark at nights because i have electric lights which are cheap. Light bulbs have wires in them that glow white-hot when electricity goes through them.
• Light usually goes straight from one thing to another. But i can make it turns corners by using a mirror. A mirror is usually a piece of glass with a silvery coating on one side to send back, or reflect, the light. I can't reflect light well without the silvery coating because most light goes straight through ordinary glass, which is transparent. Water is also transparent, and let's light through. Algough water and glass do not reflect light well, they can make it bend.
  

Hearing

Hearing is one of our senses. I hear when our ears pick up sound waves in the air which make our eardrums vibrate. These vibrations are passed on the nerves inside the air, which send message to the brain. The brain then tells us what the sounds are like.

When the sounds waves vibrate slowly, I hear a low, or low-pitched, sound. When the sound vibrations are fast, I hear high-pitched sounds. Some animals, such as dogs, can hear much higher sound than i can and we sometimes use 'silent' whistles to call them. The sound these 'silent' whistles make is so high that I can't hear it, but the dogs can.

Bats can make and hear even higher sounds. They make these sounds to find they way around at night by listening for echoes from things in their path. They find their prey in the way.
